 LYNNE EDWARDS 1944 – 2015
A Tribute

On Tuesday morning, 1st September, a memorial service was held at the Kimberley Golf Club for the late Lynne Edwards in which the presiding minister suggested that he would not dwell on the life of Lynne, but, would leave that to her many gathered friends to share after the service.

For most of us, the current Members of the Kimberley Golf Club, Lynne was a lady who was not only a regular fellow golfer, but, was for years the driving force behind the annual Ladies Section Golf Fundraiser held to coincide and to celebrate National Women’s Day. Through these many years there have been just as many charities that have benefitted financially by her dedication and enthusiasm toward what she saw as a special opportunity to assist those less fortunate.

With specific regard to Lynne’s golfing achievements the records show that she was the Northern Cape Lady Champion in 1966, at the age of just 22. The KGC membership records show that she joined the Club six years later in January 1972 and won the Ladies Championships in 1973, 1978 and 1979. Two decades later, in 1992, she was once again presented the Championship Trophy. On several occasions in that decade she won the Senior Ladies Trophy, played for in that annual championship event. A very competitive golfer there was in all likelihood very little on offer that, over the years, she did not win. This would include the Freddie Tait Trophy in 1990, an event reinstated that year after a break of 53 years as part of the Kimberley Golf Club’s centenary celebrations. A fitting win when one considers she and Tait enjoyed a commonality - Modder River. She also won the 1999 Barney Barnato Ladies Order of Merit.

As one who was always ready to assist, Lynne served on the Ladies Golf Committee on several occasions.

A leading lady golfer at the KGC, however, Lynne will always be remembered as a Lady first and Golfer second.
