Beer edges Lamprecht for the 2016 Nomads North &
South Championship
Title
81 young players
from throughout the RSA, the Who’s Who of junior golf, teed up at the KGC
Wednesday and Thursday in the annual Nomads North and South Junior Championship
seeking not only a win, but, also the opportunity to earn points for the all-important
National Rankings.
Windy conditions
on Wednesday kept scores in check for the opening rounds, just two players
under par in the morning and three players under par in the afternoon. Leading
the field after 36 holes were Christo Lambrecht (Oubaai GC) on 142 (69, 72),
Bradley de Beer (Fancourt CC) on 143 (73, 70) and Franklin Manchest (George GC)
on 144 (71, 73).

on the final round Thursday morning:
“Southern Cape
duo Bradley de Beer and Christo Lamprecht traded the lead a few times during
the final round of the Nomads North and South
Championship, but a well-timed birdie at the penultimate hole helped De Beer to
clinch his first national title at Kimberley on Thursday.
The
16-year-old Fancourt player signed off with an even-par 72 to triumph on
one-under-par 215, while Lamprecht from Oubaai returned a 74 to take second on
even par.
One
behind at the start of the round De Deer leapfrogged Lamprecht for the early
lead with back-to-back birdies at two and three, but the pair drew level at
even par after De Beer dropped a shot at five and made double bogey at six.
De
Beer edged clear again with an eagle at the par five seventh, but lost the
advantage with a double bogey at nine. Lamprecht kept control at one under
through the turn, but handed De Beer the lead when he bogeyed 13 to go even-par
again.
De
Beer dropped a shot at 15 and the pair remained tied at even-par until the 17th
hole decided the outcome of the Nomads Order of Merit event.”
“I
hit driver down the fairway, but Christo pulled his tee shot into the trees,”
De Beer said.
“Christo
punched out into the left greenside bunker, but left his trap shot well short
and two-putted for bogey. I had 100 meters to the pin and hit a soft sand-wedge
to a foot and holed the putt for birdie.
“I
hit a good drive at 18 and seven-iron just short of the green, but I didn’t hit
the greatest chip. I had about two meters to the pin, but the first putt raced
just past the hole. I had a shot in hand, so I just took my time over the par
putt to seal the victory.”
De
Beer, a student at Glenwood House, was pleased with the victory so early in the
season.
“My
coach, Adam McKinley, and I worked on a number of things last year to get my
game to a higher competitive level and I didn’t compete in a lot of events,”
said De Beer.
“It’s
really great to come out here and to test myself against some of the top
juniors in the country. The final round was really tight and it could have gone
either way. I wasn’t driving the ball all that well and a couple of wayward
drives on the front nine cost me a lot of shots, but I’m really proud that I
managed to scramble well to keep myself in the tussle. It’s a great feeling to
walk away the champion.”
Werner Deysel
(Woodhill CC) and Luke Mayo (Mount Edgecomb CC) were tied for third place on
218. All Africa Champion Sentanio Minnie (Glendower GC) and Franklin Manchest
followed on 219. Joshua Edwards fared the best from the KGC with rounds of 76,
77, 74 tied for 20th on 227.

Meanwhile
in the Nomads SA Girl’s Rose Bowl
Championship played at the Port Elizabeth Golf Club the KGC’s Mikah Poonawassy took
the D-Division honours with a six point victory after posting rounds of 37 and
35 individual stableford points.
For those statistically minded the Albatross Live
Scoring System employed in the Nomads North and South Championship at the
Kimberley Golf Club provided some interesting reading at the end of the 54 hole
event.
All in all the 81 young players posted 21 eagles, 528
birdies, 2161 pars, as well as 1337 bogeys and 327 double bogeys or worse.
The stroke average per hole, which defines the stroke
rating as we know it, rated the par four fifth as stroke 1 for the tournament.
The hole conceded one eagle and just seven birdies with an average .68 over
par. Most surprisingly the short par three fourteenth was rated stroke 2,
conceding just five birdies with an average of .62 over par. At the other end
of the scale the par five twelfth was rated stroke 18, conceding two eagles and
99 birdies with an average -.32 under par.
For the record the sixteenth, stroke one as the
members know it, only rated stroke 10 for the tournament.
The low round for the tournament was 68. The biggest
contrast in a single round was 31, 43 for 74.
Wilco Nienaber, who has attracted so much attention
recently, returned a very competitive 73, 72 on Wednesday at which point he lay
fourth on the leaderboard. Sadly he had to settle for an 80 on Thursday and a
tie for ninth position. Nonetheless his opening drive on the first tee on
Thursday morning produced another extraordinary feat. With the tee placed on
the right half of the box most players opted for a safe iron shot inside the
tree line, landing short of the fairway bunker. Not young Nienaber, he reached for his driver, faced the
green and launched his tee shot directly up and over the tallest tree forty
metres in front of him to land, once again, not too far short of the car path
rope at the green.

Club News
Saturday
afternoon the Mayoral Diamond and Dorings Golf Day saw Clive Karope and B Rasego
post a winning 56 points, the format a betterball stableford played from a
scramble drive. Andries Kori and Parks Mahaboa were
the
runners up on 54 points on a count out from Thato and Alvin Botes.
Donald
Whitebooi and Bernie Turton were fourth on 48 points.
In
the morning Club competition, an IPS, Nico Ross was first on a count out on 37
points. Graham Grobbelaar from Badplaas was the runner up on the same score.
Eddie Barkhuizen was third on 34 points.
Andries Kori
finished one under par to post 20 points and the winning score in the Friday
Flamingo casino Meat and Slots Niner. Gavin Oliver was second on 19 points. A
count out on 18 points placed AJ Durant third and Keenan Aysen fourth. Flex
Rantoa collected fifth prize on 17 points.
Braam Botes
claimed the only six pointer of the day on his way to 22 points and a clear win
the KWV Niner Thursday afternoon. Nico Ross was second on 20 points. Herby
Woodbridge was third on 17 points.
The Tuesday Super
Six Tournament sponsored by Cleveland Golf was won by Tenderson Mantyetsa on 15
points. Allen Meyers was the runner up on 13 points.
This week the KGC
hosts the Cleveland Golf Super Six on Tuesday, the Horseshoe Inn BBS on
Wednesday, the KWV Niner on Thursday and the Sun Flamingo Niner along with the
CTCS draw on Friday. At the weekend it is the Monthly Medal on Saturday and the
Sealing Solutions League on Sunday.

subscription shall become payable on
the first day of January in each and every year”.
The extension to 31 March, as has become common to
many Members, was a Committee concession only.
That concession has been reviewed in lieu of the
fact that
both
the Affiliation fees and the HNA fees are payable by the end of February.
